Tergeste (from terg, "market", and este, "city") founded by the Romans during the 2nd century b.C. quickly became a lively commercial burg, a function that was favoured by its placement between Aquileia and the Istrian coast.The end of the war and the fall of Nazifascism in May 1945 did not give back the city its serenity. On May 1st 1945, Trieste was occupied by the Yugoslav army. There followed forty days of repression and the massacres of the Foibe (when many opponents of communism were thrown into the deep and deadly Karst caves). In June 1945 an Anglo-American administration set in, known as the Allied Military Government, which managed the city pending a decision. With the Paris Treaty of 1947 the Triestine territory was declared international, and the Territorio Libero di Trieste (TLT - "Free Territory of Trieste") was created and placed under the rule of a governor appointed by the Security Council of the United States. That is how Trieste became a border town, "the gateway to the East", charatceristics that have marked its history and keep being part of the unique soul of this city, along with its Middle-European charm. Trieste is now looking to recover its role as strategic seaport and to develop its tertiary and scientific sector, while remaining a firm believer in the inclusion of eastern European countries in the European union.
